Savior of the Honey Feast Day in Ukraine

  • On the 14th of August the Ukrainian people celebrate the Savior of the Honey Feast Day (Medoviy Spas). This holiday is also called Makoveya.


    In Ukraine this celebration is connected to the remembrance of the Christianization of Rus’ on the 1st of August 988 year. In the “Narrative of ranks of the great holly conciliar and apostolic Koimesis Church” that was written in 1627 is given the following explanation of the celebration on the 14th of August: “On the day of the Holy Cross the procession for the blessing of the water and human being may take place, in all the villages and towns”.


    With the Savior of the Honey Feast Day is connected the beginning of the two weeks Dormition Fast – Spasovka (so call people this Fast in Ukraine). The Ukrainians believe that the Dormition Fast is very strict, and the only one stricter Fast is the Great Fast (the Easter Fast). There are a lot of ripe fruit and other food, and that’s why this fast is thought to be easy. The Dormition Fast is also a remembrancer to tha fact, that the summer is almost over, because in the second part of August the nights are longer and colder.


    On the first day of the Fasten, on the 14th of August, women baked the fast cookies of the wheat flour dough and poured them with the thick honey mixed with the crushed poppy seeds. The Ukrainian women baked famous makoviki (poppy-seed cakes) of poppy seeds and honey as well. They are so delicious!


    To the Savior of the Honey Feast Day people consecrate the sweet food in the church and then eat it at the feast table, present it or treat their friends and family with honey and poppy seed delectables.


    Traditional dishes to the Savior of the Honey Feast Day are pancakes with honey or honey dry biscuits. People usually drink the mead, honey wine or “Medovukha”, so call it people in Ukraine.


    Another name of the Savior of the Honey Feast Day is Makovey. According to the folk sayings, the poppy becomes ripe to this day and it is also consecrated in the churches and after it is used for cooking of versatile feast dishes.


    The poppy seeds can protect the house against the evil eye as well. To gain this aim people bring the consecrated poppy seeds in the corners of the rooms and at the door. A bunch of field flowers can be a great protective amulet. It is called makoveychik and consists of some sorts of grasses and flowers: poppy glomus, snowball tree leaves, sunflower, marigold, marjoram, mint, sweet clover, pieces of avena, clasping pepperwort and purple sage. The consecrated bunch of plants on the Savior of the Honey Feast Day is not just a protective talisman, but a unique decoration of your house as well.


    There are some folk sayings and rituals to the Savior of the Honey Feast Day. So for example, if you want to be healthy and successful the whole year you should eat a spoon of consecrated honey of new harvest and drink three draughts of water from the well, because on the Savior of the Honey Feast Day honey and water have some special energetics.


    Some other folk sayings are connected to the water as well. After the 14th of August the water is getting colder and people can see the blooming of water. It means people can swim in the surface water bodies the last time on the Savior of the Honey Feast Day. The roses fade and the dew is getting colder and colder in the morning.


    The consecrated on the Savior of the Honey Feast Day water can be used for a bout of cleaning after the Savior of the Honey Feast Day to wash out all the negative energy of the house.


    Eating the first spoon of honey on the 14th of August you should make a wish. And it should make real! People say as well, that on the Savior of the Honey Feast Day all the sins are being absolved to the women if they ask their guardian angel about it.
